Skin Benefits of Infrared Saunas

  1. An infrared sauna exerts heat at a lower temperature than a regular sauna, ranging between 49 to 60 degrees celsius allowing a lengthier time in the sauna for a more intense effect on the body. The sauna medium differs from a regular sauna because the heat in a traditional sauna comes from hot water, which heats the room first and then the person, whereas the heat from infrared sauna comes from infrared heat rays that heat the body first via penetration. Infrared saunas are thought to be a means of pulling out impurities from the body and may be beneficial to the skin in several ways.

    Weight and Cellulite

  2. According to The Infrared Sauna Reference, the Infrared rays’ deep penetration into the body increases the body’s metabolic rate, causing it to sweat. Human fat starts to liquefy, supposedly allowing subcutaneous fat to be released in the sweat. The body also loses fluids, so that in a 30-minute session, the body can lose up to 300 calories. This process also cleanses the pores of your skin, leaving it looking healthier, and purportedly reducing visible cellulite.

    Detoxification

  3. A significant benefit that infrared saunas may have is the detoxifying effect on the body. Infrared saunas may rid the body of stored toxic elements through the sweating process. According to the Infrared Sauna Reference, an analysis of the sweat that is emitted from the body during a session of infrared sauna contains approximately 20 percent toxins, including lead, cadmium, nickel, copper, and sodium. Getting rid of these toxins keeps the skin fresh and healthy, and may slow down the aging process.

    Eczema

  4. As stated in the Infrared Sauna Reference, the infrared rays cause increased blood circulation, and this allows for more oxygen and nutritious elements to be received by the cells. This process cleanses the pores of the skin and may allow for the emission of toxins. Getting rid of itching and scratching helps with the healing process of eczema.

    Acne

  5. After using the sauna for three to four sessions, closed pores start to open, getting rid of clogging cosmetics and loosening dead skin cells. This leads to clearing up of acne, blocked pores, and blackheads.

    Psoriasis

  6. Psoriasis is hard to treat, but the heating up of the body from infrared rays acts like a false fever, and this may have a positive effect on the immune system. According to the Merck Manuals Online Medical Library, body temperature increases as a response to infection, and this improves the body’s immune system. It slows down virus and bacteria growth, and, along with the increase in blood circulation and flow of nutrients, it helps treat this skin condition.

Infrared Sauna Pros & Benefits

Infrared saunas are considered by many to be the next generation of health technology. Infrared saunas use technology that is designed not to heat the air inside the sauna, but the human bodies directly. High-quality infrared saunas use dense ceramic plates to help generate and focus their infrared energy, while less-expensive models use metal coils.

    Technology

  1. Infrared saunas do not heat the air inside the sauna. Instead, the infrared light contacts the human body, heating it directly.

    Pros

  2. Infrared saunas have the distinct advantage of being more energy-efficient than their counterparts, which use heating elements to heat the entirety of the air inside the sauna.

    Benefits

  3. Infrared saunas use radiant heat to heat the bodies inside the sauna. Much like sunlight, the infrared light waves and increased temperature both act to increase circulation within the body. Ailments that are primarily circulation-related have shown distinct short-term improvement with infrared sauna use.

Health Benefits of Infrared Sauna

The health benefits of infrared sauna are comparable to, but outnumber the benefits offered by the traditional steam sauna.

A note about Health Benefits of Infrared Sauna

In natural health and healing, we believe in holistic health and healing, as we realize that different parts of the human body are highly interlinked, often beyond Man’s understanding. We also believe that the body has the ability to heal itself of any disease, even supposedly incurable diseases.

In order to do so, the body needs the support of some basic dietary and lifestyle good health habits, such as a full body detox and a proper understanding and application of nutrition. Taking these fundamental health steps will greatly magnify the effects and benefits of any of our health-promoting efforts, including the use of certain holistic remedies.

Infrared energy is known to penetrate 5cm deep into the body and is reported to increase circulation and nourish damaged tissue. The health benefits are varied and many, as listed below:

  • Improved Circulation – Far Infrared Radiation, or FIR, has the ability to penetrate, refract, radiate and reflect. Its deep acting features allow FIR to reach the subcutaneous tissues and the thermal effect on deep layers of tissue causes dilation of blood vessels boosting the circulatory system. This helps in flushing out impurities from the blood and other metabolic wastes are expunged via sweating.
  • Pain Relief – The deep tissue heat provided by FIR is ideal for relieving sore muscles and joint pain from chronic conditions like arthritis.
  • Better Circulation and Energy – Another of the health benefits of infrared sauna therapy is better circulation and increased energy. The heat radiated by FIR saunas causes a phenomenon called “resonance” when it is absorbed by the cells in the body. This invigorates and boosts cellular metabolism and blood circulation instantaneously.
  • Weight Loss – FIR heat therapy can be used as a complementary aid in weight loss programs for accelerating metabolism which results in large quantities of calories lost in a single sauna heat session.
  • Improved Heart Health – The health benefits of infrared saunas extend to cardiovascular health, too. FIR therapy increases heart rate and circulation, which is vital to good, robust cardiovascular health. Having a far infrared sauna therapy session is equivalent to a good physical workout.
  • Promotes Healing – Another of the health benefits of infrared saunas is that it encourages speedy recovery from injuries. Since FIR therapy causes vasodilatation of peripheral blood vessels, sprains and strains and related pain are relieved much quicker and the natural healing process is aided.
  • Detoxification – One of the most important health benefits of infrared saunas is its ability to effect massive detoxification. Due to the sweating induced by FIR therapy, extra toxic waste products are quickly expunged during intense perspiration. The skin is the largest eliminative organ and it is possible to get rid of large quantities of impurities through its surface area during FIR heat therapy.
  • Reduces Stress, Induces Relaxation – Infrared sauna therapy helps in stress reduction. Prior to a massage, FIR therapy is an excellent method of inducing relaxation and relieving stress.
  • Cosmetic Glow – FIR therapy is much in demand since it puts the much sought after glow that accompanies healthy skin, due to its propensity to enhance blood circulation and skin nutritive features, promoting healthy tone and texture to skin.
  • Improved Immunity – Another of the most important health benefits of infrared saunas is its ability to enhance immunity of the body. This is due to the artificial fever inducing properties of FIR therapy. This stimulates the immune system and also helps the body to fight off any invasive organisms like bacteria or virus in the early stages of cold, cough, or flu, preventing disease from occurring.

Infrared Sauna versus Traditional Steam Sauna – More Benefits

There are additional benefits of infrared saunas, when compared with traditional steam saunas.

  • Infrared heaters use direct light energy to warm the body in a manner which is similar to sunlight.
  • Infrared saunas work in a manner where only the body inside the sauna chamber is heated directly, while the surrounding air remains unaffected. Traditional saunas heat the entire enclosure and some people experience difficulties breathing in this hot air. This feature of infrared saunas also results in power conservation, as well as deep tissue penetration, which most people find very beneficial.
  • It is likely that a conventional sauna may spread and cultivate bacteria due to its humid, heavy air, but this is not the case in an infrared sauna where the environment is not humid and therefore more hygienic and free from bacteria.

Overall, it is a matter of personal preference of users, as to which is better, infrared or traditional saunas. While, on the one hand, many steam sauna advocates feel that an infrared sauna is not as satisfying in providing the relaxing and invigorating experience of a steam sauna, on the other hand, infrared saunas actually have more benefits.

Personally, I find the infrared sauna therapy experience more comfortable and pleasant.

The Best Ways to Use an Infrared Sauna

Infrared saunas are a wonderful way to detoxify your body, improve your circulation, soothe aching muscles and physically and mentally relax. You can find Infrared saunas in spas, health clubs and gyms, and increasingly in people’s homes. Using an infrared sauna is rather easy and can become an enjoyable habit that also benefits your health.

      General Considerations

    1. Drink 3 to 4 glasses of water before your sauna to amply hydrate your system. Take a bath or shower without soap or bath gels to rinse your skin and prepare for the detoxification process. Let the sauna heat up before you enter. Follow the protocol of the sauna you use—if it’s in a public space, wear a bathing suit, hygiene suit or towels as indicated. If you’re in an individual sauna, lay a towel down on the bench as the sauna heats. While undressing, concentrate on relaxing your mind.
Enter the sauna and position yourself comfortably on a towel on the bench. You want the majority of your body to receive the infrared energy, so sit with your feet on the bench, knees bent, or stretch out your legs and lean back against the wall.
Let your mind settle, and breathe deeply. Taking a sauna has the dual rewards of helping you to relax and improving your health. While you start to heat up and begin to sweat, try to slow your breathing to counts of 10 as you inhale and to counts of 10 while you exhale.

      Frequency and Additives

    2. To maximize the benefits, take an infrared sauna one to three times per week. Select a good time when you are unhurried and can spend an hour on the process before, during and after the sauna.
Some spas offer sauna lotions that are thought to enhance circulation or reduce cellulite. Use these if you choose, although they are not necessary to gain the full benefit from an infrared sauna session.

      Completing a Sauna Session

    3. When you finish your sauna, sit inside for a few minutes before you start moving again. Stretch your muscles and enjoy the moments.
As you exit the sauna, try to move without hurrying. Dry off with a towel, or take a cool shower to rinse your skin before drying off.
Drink another 2 to 3 glasses of water and sit for 5 to 10 minutes after you are dressed to rest and let your body rehydrate. This transition period helps your body take in the effects of the sauna and cool down before your next activity.

The Benefits of Infrared Sauna Technology

    1. Traditional saunas are small rooms brought to high temperatures with heated rocks. Wet saunas incorporate water poured on the rocks to produce steam, while infrared saunas create heat with infrared heaters. These heaters emit infrared radiant heat that does not heat up the room, rather heats the people in the room—a similar effect to that created by sitting in sunshine on a cool day. While some studies indicate that traditional saunas provide health benefits, infrared saunas provide these benefits as well.

      Pain Relief

    2. Research shows benefits of Infrared saunas for chronic pain relief. Rheumatoid arthritis and ankylosing spondylitis patients, for instance, showed reduced pain and stiffness over four weeks of treatment. The patients experienced more significant results during the actual time spent in a sauna.

      Fatigue Reduction

    3. Fatigue also decreased for patients. Some studies have deemed Infrared saunas helpful for patients with chronic fatigue syndrome.

      Cardiovascular and Metabolic Effects

    4. Infrared sauna technology helps increase circulation and decrease blood pressure, infrared saunas also help burn calories and raise metabolism.

      Detoxification

    5. Infrared sauna manufacturers claim a greater variety of health benefits, including that these saunas can eliminate heavy metals, unwanted acids, ammonia and other toxins from the body.

      Other Possible Benefits

    6. Benefits listed include decreasing internal congestion, eliminating bacteria and viruses, balancing body pH levels, activating water molecules in the body, stimulating production of proteins that heal cells, and eliminating cells damaged by fungi, parasites and radiation.

How to Use a Sauna to Lose Weight

Saunas help to shed water stored in the body. This can result in weight loss, but it tends to be temporary, since water stores are quickly resupplied in the body after drinking fluids. Your heart rate will increase, and the body does burn calories while it is sweating to regulate your body temperature, but the caloric expenditure is typically not significant enough for permanent, drastic weight loss.

    Difficulty: Moderately Challenging

    Instructions

    Things You’ll Need:

    • Water
    1. 1

Drink plenty of water prior to entering a sauna. Because saunas are designed to make you sweat, it is important that you are well hydrated, so that your body is able to sweat while still maintaining the necessary level of hydration to function, and moderate body temperature.

    2. 2

Go into the sauna. How long you stay in depends on how well your body is able to acclimate, and how often you use a sauna. If you are new to sauna use, limit your time to 7 minute intervals, and gradually increase the time your endurance has increased.

    3. 3

Stay in the sauna, sitting or laying down, for 7-25 minutes, depending on your experience. The longer you are in the sauna, the more you will sweat, and therefore, the more water weight you will shed.

    4. 4

Stand carefully as you exit because you may feel dizzy from the exposure to heat. After exiting, drink at least 4 glasses of water, so that your body can maintain its necessary hydration levels, without having extra to store in the body.

    5. 5

After 15-20 minutes, enter the sauna again, and repeat the process. Increase the length of time you stay inside by 2-5 minutes, but don’t exceed 30 minutes at one time. Again, stand carefully and exit, and drink 4 glasses of water.

    6. 6

Repeat this process for 2-3 cycles, up to 4 days a week. With continued use, you’ll notice that you’ll lose water weight. Pay close attention to how your body is reacting to the heat exposure and water loss, and use the sauna less frequently if your not feeling well as a result of use.

    Infrared Saunas for Pain

Heat therapy or Hyperthermia is centuries old and was employed by the Egyptians, Romans and Greeks to hasten healing, cleanse the body and ease sore muscles. Although heat therapy is currently employed for detoxification purposes and to relieve small aches and pains, doctors are just now beginning to explore the possible avenues of major pain relief through infrared saunas. This is partly due to emerging clinical research on conditions responsive to heat therapy. "Heat Responsive Pain" or HRP is the term researchers are now using to refer to specific pain brought on by conditions or diseases that can be lessened with ongoing heat therapy.

      Back Pain

    1. Chronic back pain is just one type of pain that can be classified as HRP. Upper and lower back pain is such a common condition that three out of four South Africans experience it during their lifetimes. Most incidences of back pain, especially lower back pain, result from pulling and straining the muscles surrounding the spine. This straining can lead to muscles spasms, which, in turn, can lead to varying amounts of pain. Sitting in an infrared sauna not only decreases the intensity of pain signals sent to the brain, but stimulates oxygen flow and loosens muscles and connective tissue. The result is a quickened healing process, pain relief and better mobility.

      Menstrual Pain

    2. Menstrual pain has long been soothed by electric heating pads and hot baths, together with herbal tea. These "folk" remedies use heat therapy to ease the discomfort of menstrual cramps, which can be so bad that doctors will prescribe medicine to manage the pain. Clinical psychologist Peter Vicente, says that heat therapy lessens pain by activating complex mechanisms in the body, and we are only now discovering the wide range of benefits that this type of therapy provides.

      Fibromyalgia

    3. Fibromyalgia is a condition characterized by deep, persistent pain. It can range anywhere from mild muscle aches to debilitating, excruciating chronic pain that does not centre in one place, but spreads like wildfire throughout the body. An infrared sauna in this case can not only be helpful—it can be life-saving. The causes of the condition are not well known, but some doctors believe it is poisoning from toxins and heavy metals like aluminium, mercury and lead. Sauna therapy can remove these toxins, stimulate the immune system and relieve the pain. Dr. Nenah Sylver discusses infrared saunas for use in treating fibromyalgia in her book "The Holistic Handbook of Sauna Therapy." She states that infrared saunas in particular can be invaluable because of the lower temperatures, making the therapy much more endurable.

      Rheumatoid Arthritis

    4. Arthritis pain is the start of a disease process that causes crippling of the extremities, swollen joints and limited range of motion. This chronic inflammation can spread to other parts of the body, including vital organs and, therefore, is known as a systematic disease. The pain that accompanies the disease is not necessarily due to the progression or severity of symptoms—it varies from person to person. In the online medical database PubMed, a study done by the Expertise Centre of Health in the Netherlands found that infrared sauna therapy for patients with rheumatoid arthritis not only immediately decreased stiffness and pain, but demonstrated significant possibility for long-term benefits.

      Conclusion

            Infrared sauna

Infrared saunas can be ideal allies in the battle against Heat Responsive Pain, offering a healing modality that is tolerated much better than traditional saunas. Infrared or sunlight saunas heat the body with infrared rays and, as such, can produce the same amount of healing, detoxification and pain-reducing effects at a much lower temperature range. In fact, infrared heat is tolerated so well it is used to warm newborn babies in hospital incubators. The chronic pain associated with back problems, menstrual cramps, fibromyalgia and rheumatoid arthritis can be significantly reduced or eliminated with infrared sauna therapy.
